The latest LEGO Ideas project soars past 10,000 mark with tribute to NASA

The latest LEGO Ideas project jets into space with 10,000 supporters, paying tribute to NASA and the miracle of space travel.

Marking three consecutive days of LEGO Ideas projects passing that crucial 10,000 supporter mark, LEGO Astronaut – Never Give Up was designed by legotruman, the brains behind another LEGO Ideas project that plays on a popular meme.

“This project is a tribute to all the brilliant engineers and brave astronauts at NASA, who made the miracle of space exploration a reality,” the fan designer wrote in the description of the project.

Made from 927 pieces, the design features an articulated astronaut, based on the NASA Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuit design that’s commonly used in the International Space Station. It was also used by Bruce McCandless II, who performed the first untethered spacewalk in history, an image that’s recreated in the shots of the build.

Standing 25cm tall, the astronaut’s fingers are posable, with 12 articulated joints throughout. It also comes with the new generation of a SAFER unit (a propulsion system used in space) and a more compact version of the MMU jetpack.

This marks the 38th project to make it into the first 2023 review and its fate will now rest in the LEGO Group. It would certainly pair well with the existing NASA-inspired LEGO sets, like 10283 NASA Space Shuttle Discovery and 10266 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander – but could that mean the LEGO Group will steer clear of similar sets? Only time will tell. For now, here’s a reminder of every LEGO Ideas project to make it past 10,000 supporters so far this year.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
