Push play at LEGO Ideas for a potential new retro set

Another LEGO Sony Walkman has cracked the review stage at LEGO Ideas, presumably attempting to capitalise on the success of 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera.

Retro objects are in vogue once again at LEGO Ideas, and at the forefront is Marc Corfmat’s 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera, which landed on shelves in January. Four days later, LEGO Ideas user  Srta.JirafaEnfadada uploaded their Sony Walkman project to the platform – and it’s now racked up 10,000 votes in a little under three months.

That means the retro music player will now progress to the first 2024 review, in which the LEGO Ideas review board will consider whether or not to produce it as an official set. This pitch includes the WM-22 Walkman in red, along with a pair of headphones and two cassette tapes (plus two other colour options), the latter of which can each be placed inside the opening Walkman.

“I think it would be a great LEGO set because it brings back a historical object that has marked the lives of many people and revives a lot of experiences and memories lived in the past,” the builder explains on the project page. But this isn’t the first time a LEGO Sony Walkman has reached the LEGO Ideas review stage: almost two years ago, Polish fan builder Jaroslaw Ksiazczyk (also known as Jerac) took a similar design to the second 2022 review.

The LEGO Group opted not to move forward with that project, but that doesn’t mean all hope is lost for this new iteration. The Ideas team has said before that the selection process is often just a matter of timing – and the sales data from 21345 Polaroid OneStep SX-70 Camera might just be enough to convince the board to release another retro brick-built object. (It’s actually already tested the waters with an unlicensed tape player at a smaller scale in the Insiders Rewards Centre.)

We’ll find out along with the results of the first 2024 review towards the back end of the year. For now, check out every project in the running in this round below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

Cassette tape should come with a pencil side build.
