Here comes a possible replacement for retiring LEGO Icons Atari

LEGO Icons 10306 Atari 2600 retires in a few days time but one LEGO Ideas fan designer has successfully put together a potential replacement.

With Finnish designer RippleDrive’s third attempt at this subject matter, Sony PlayStation 2 made it past 10,000 supporters on LEGO Ideas on December 27. The build accurately recreates the sixth-generation Sony console that released almost 25 years ago in 2000.

Not only does it look the part, but it also features a number of interactive features, including an openable disc tray and a movable disc reading lens. The memory card covers can also be removed to plug thems into their slots, as well as a spot for the controller to connect to the console. As an extra easter egg for PS fans, the inside of the controller features the seven orbs from the PlayStation 2 original menu.

The detail carries all the way through to the inner workings of the console, visible through lift-away panel sections. You can also take out the mechanical parts of the console to get a closer look at them.

Having another brick-built gaming console to display alongside 10306 Atari 2600 would make for a fun display – if the project can impress the LEGO Ideas designers. To do so, Sony PlayStation 2 needs to go up against 44 other fan-designed builds in the battle to become a real LEGO Ideas set. Check out its competition below, with just a few days left until the third 2024 review closes at the end of the year.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
