Here be dragons in the latest LEGO Ideas set to join the 10K club

The latest LEGO Ideas set to make 10,000 supporters includes a nifty fold-out feature to reveal a hidden pirate-themed secret.

Fan designer SparkosPirate Treasure Chest became the 31st LEGO Ideas submission to make it into the third and final LEGO Ideas review for 2023. While at first it might look just like a brick-built chest, it opens to reveal something even cooler than treasure: a buildable map of an island, complete with a waterfall, beaches, and rocky outcrops.

Essentially, it lays out a dynamic landscape perfect for pirates to explore and can easily fold in and out of the chest via its hinged parts. Made up of 2,500 parts, there are even two locations where treasure and jewels can be found, as well as tiny boats cruising the high seas.

The inspiration for Pirate Treasure Chest is buried in the personal history of the designer and in the long-standing history of LEGO.

“My introduction to LEGO came when my father gave me 6265 Sabre Island, which he placed into a life-size Treasure Chest (personally made) that had the ability like this design to fold down on all four sides to become a Treasure Island (i.e. LEGO playing surface),” Sparkos wrote. “This design is my tribute to that original introduction.”

Of course, Pirate Treasure Chest isn’t a surefire LEGO Ideas set yet. It’ll now go up against at least 30 other sets in the third 2023 review. Remind yourself of the full range of sets with potential to become real-life LEGO ideas sets in the table below, and check out which sets are now confirmed to become real sets from the record-breaking first 2023 review.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
