LEGO Ideas The Martian project takes off to 10K after a highly requested update
A LEGO Ideas fan designer included community requests into their project – and it seems to have paid off, with the set soaring past 10,000 votes.
Australian fan designer Mr Sci-Fi’s The Martian is based on the popular movie and novel of the same name, recreating the Red Planet, complete with the Ares IV Mav, the Rover 2, the NASA / JPL Pathfinder probe, and the HAB. The design also includes a minifigure of Mark Watney, but has also had various elements added to it, at the request of fans.
That included tweaks to the design of the Rover and the HAB, thanks to fan request – as well as one waste-related addition. Mr Sci-Fi said that they got dozens of requests on social media to include reference to how Watney used human waste from his fellow astronauts for nutrients to help the potatoes grow.
“Many people seem to want that represented in this project, so I have added this to the main Hab image,” they wrote. “People can choose to add or remove it as they please.”
The LEGO community certainly loves its poop jokes, with plenty of them already woven into existing LEGO sets. With its success, The Martian now becomes the 95th project in the second 2024 review round, with the record-breaking collection inching ever closer to 100 sets. Thanks for the write up and support. I just found out LEGO might be releasing a Project Hail Mary (same author as the Martian and one of my fav novels of all time) set around the movie release early this year (March 2026). Would be awesome to have both The Martian and Project Hail Mary!!
