LEGO The Simpsons could be back on the menu thanks to this Krusty Burger project

The Simpsons could one day be back on the menu in LEGO Stores thanks to the latest LEGO Ideas project to squeeze into the third 2023 review, which pitches ‘the set we all anticipated’…

LEGO The Simpsons enjoyed a brief run in the mid-2010s, comprised of two Collectible Minifigures series and two direct-to-consumer builds: 71006 The Simpsons House in 2014, and 71016 Kwik-E-Mart in 2015. At the time, most of us predicted the LEGO Group would keep up annual releases of Springfield’s most iconic buildings, such as the elementary school, nuclear plant and – of course – Krusty Burger.

But it wasn’t to be. The theme ultimately fizzled out, leaving plenty of iconic characters and locations on the cutting room floor. We may now get another shot at some of those thanks to FastBrickStudios’ The Simpsons: The Krusty Burger project, however, which has just inched past 10,000 votes to reach the third 2023 review. The 2,996-piece build apes the design language of the Kwik-E-Mart, and it’s a real passion project for the fan designer.

“I was initially very surprised with how quickly and minimally my favourite LEGO theme retired,” they wrote on the project page. “Given all of the possible locations Springfield has to offer, I expected to see many more Simpsons sets and minifigures released throughout the years, ultimately piecing together a LEGO Springfield town of my own.

“Given the show’s success, and with it being the longest-running TV comedy, it didn’t cross my mind that the theme would get discontinued with so few sets. Seeing [the LEGO Group] retire this property encouraged me to design and build what you see in front of you, The Krusty Burger! The set that we all anticipated to have after The Kwik-E-Mart.”

Details scattered throughout the build include a Krusty menu, a surveillance camera, a fully-equipped kitchen and (naturally) plenty of Krusty Burgers. Again following the template of both 71006 The Simpsons and 71016 Kwik-E-Mart, the pitch also includes a vehicle in Marge’s orange station wagon, along with nine characters: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Mr. Teeny, the squeaky-voiced teen, Plopper and Krusty the Clown himself.

All but the squeaky-voiced teen, Mr. Teeny and Plopper have already appeared as minifigures, so if the LEGO Ideas team does take this opportunity to restart its Simpsons theme, fingers crossed it’s a bit more adventurous with its character selection (even if it has to start playing fast and loose with relevance).

There are no guarantees this will be the second coming for the animated show, though: the Ideas review board first needs to pass judgement on whether LEGO The Simpsons could succeed after nearly a decade on pause. That will happen as part of the third 2023 review, which will close for submissions at some stage in the next couple of days. You can check out all 38 projects in this round below.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
