Dizzying LEGO Ideas roller coaster rides to review in virtual reality

A dizzying LEGO Ideas project inspired by double-helix roller coasters has spun its way to 10K, and you can experience the ride in virtual reality – if you’re brave enough.

Get ready to potentially see your breakfast again, because Nachapon_L_e_g_o’s Double Helix Coaster has ridden to the LEGO Ideas review stage on the back of first-person GIFs and virtual reality videos. It’s a unique concept for an Ideas project, giving potential voters the chance to shrink down to minifigure scale and experience the mechanics of the model for themselves.

The innovation doesn’t stop there, either: the build itself is anchored around a new mechanism for LEGO roller coasters, combining two helix rails. “One is a helix lift using a worm gear gearbox operated by hand crank or a motor to push many carts to the top continuously, another one is a helix slide rail for carts to coast down in a spiral,” the builder explains.

“What makes this design possible? The answer is the cart has a lift hook only on its left side. The hook is inside and pushed by the lift when the cart is climbing. but when the cart coasts down the hook [is] outside so it will not hit the lift parts.” The model also relies on an element that doesn’t actually exist in the LEGO parts catalogue: a 13x13x3 track piece the designer created from scratch in Blender.

It hasn’t been a quick ride to the magic 10,000 votes for the nautical fairground ride, however. Nachapon_L_e_g_o first submitted their build to the crowdsourcing platform all the way back in April 2021, so it’s taken nearly two years to the day to progress to the next phase. And that means it’s joining an already-packed review stage, which now includes a towering 68 projects.

You can check them all out in the table below. Once the qualifying window closes in early May, the LEGO Ideas team will decide which (if any) of these designs to turn into official sets. We’ll likely find out the results around October 2023.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
