69 projects rejected in the first LEGO Ideas 2023 review

The results of the first LEGO Ideas 2023 review have been confirmed, announcing which submissions didn’t make the cut this time round.

As exciting as two upcoming LEGO Ideas sets are, the first 2023 review round featured a huge selection of projects – a whopping 69 of which have not been approved for an official model at the time of writing.

While some of these may be able to be resubmitted and climb to 10,000 supporters again, for now don’t expect a LEGO Ideas set based on Stargate, Spongebob, Shrek, Portal, ET and more.

Out of the staggering list, it’s surprising to see some IP-inspired projects be rejected, especially those which the LEGO Group have a history with. The likes of the two Shrek projects and Bluey present something that the LEGO Group would be partnering with for the first time, which could raise some challenges while determining which models are suitable for a set.

Similarly, while their existing agreements may no longer be in place, submissions inspired by ET, Portal and Spongebob depict licenses that the LEGO Group have released sets for before, though this may be the reason why they were rejected.

No matter what the LEGO Group’s discussions were behind the scenes, we know that a Twilight and Botanical Garden set are coming to LEGO Ideas in the future. You can find out more by clicking here.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
