LEGO Ideas first 2023 review closes with record-breaking numbers

The qualifying window for the first LEGO Ideas 2023 review has closed, with a record-breaking number of projects now competing for a spot on LEGO Store shelves.

An incredible 71 different LEGO Ideas projects have reached 10,000 votes since January 1, which means they’ll now all go into the ring in the first 2023 review. The LEGO Ideas team will consider which – if any – to move into production as official sets, to be announced later this year (likely around October, based on previous review schedules).

That’s a record number of submissions in a single review, eclipsing the first 2021 review’s 57 projects by some distance. And as you’d expect from such a mammoth list, it’s a varied mix of licensed builds, original designs and retro throwbacks to classic LEGO themes. Basically: the LEGO Ideas review board is going to have a really tough time deciding which potential sets to give the green light.

The qualifying window for the second 2023 review is now open, and will close at the beginning of September. Whether it can come close to the numbers here – and whether that will prompt the LEGO Ideas team to make any changes to the platform’s process – remains to be seen…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
