Every LEGO 2023 set reviewed by Brick Fanatics

We’ve reviewed a total of 170 different LEGO sets in 2023, from Star Wars and Icons to Ideas and Marvel. Here’s a look back over each and every one…

Hundreds and hundreds of LEGO sets have landed on shelves over the past 12 months, and we’ve been fortunate enough to get to grips with a substantial number of them. Not all of them have been winners, but there are enough stand-outs that it made whittling down for our top 10 of the year very tricky indeed.

Whether you’re wondering what’s worth catching up on from 2023 or just want a handy reference list for our reviews over the past 12 months, dive into a theme-by-theme breakdown of every LEGO set we’ve reviewed this year below. For the first verdict on 2024 sets, head over to the Reviews section of the site.

LEGO Architecture 2023 reviews

Just one LEGO Architecture set arrived on shelves this year, but we took it on its own merits all the same. 21060 Himeji Castle transports us to Japan for a modern brick-built interpretation of a relic of a bygone era, and the results are something else.

LEGO Art 2023 reviews

The LEGO Art theme continued its potted release schedule in 2023, and within its three new sets are three entirely different expressions: a relief recreation of a woodblock painting, a comic book cover that sees Spidey bursting from the frame, and a super-customisable approach to modern art.

LEGO Avatar 2023 reviews

Could James Cameron’s stupidly successful Avatar sequel conjure up equally successful LEGO sets? The Avatar: The Way of Water wave was among the first we tackled for 2023, so dive into each of the reviews below to find out. A few of these are already on the brink of retiring, so grab them while you can if any catch your eye.

LEGO BrickHeadz 2023 reviews

One of those LEGO themes that’s content to keep chugging along, the BrickHeadz theme churned out a handful of releases this year – of which a few caught our eye. The Return of the Jedi 40th anniversary megapack is worth a peek if only for that super-cute Artoo.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures 2023 reviews

Three different LEGO Collectible Minifigures series dropped in 2023, and 71037 Series 24 was one of the last to arrive in foil bags (before the inevitable switch to cardboard boxes with 71039 Marvel Series 2). It’s what’s inside the packaging that counts, though – and this year’s only in-house series was a good ‘un.

LEGO City 2023 reviews

LEGO City rewrote the rulebook under the fresh creative direction of new head honcho Simon Lucas this year, and it’s all the better for it. We took a look at some of the most interesting sets to come out of this new approach, from undersea adventures to the LEGO Group’s take on Xscape (if you know, you know) – and the theme’s biggest set to date in 60380 Downtown.

LEGO Creator 3-in-1 2023 reviews

Creator 3-in-1 is already shaping up to be one of the stand-out themes of 2024, but 2023 gave us little to grumble about either. We got to grips with the first of two parrots – a recolour followed shortly after – which is a pocket-money purchase that should be on everyone’s Christmas list.

Can you believe we found two different LEGO Batman sets to review in 2023? Okay, so a handful more did actually arrive on shelves this year, pretty much all anchored around the Dark Knight and Joker. But these were the two that broke past the boundaries of Batwings and Batmobiles to offer something a little different…

LEGO Friends 2023 reviews

Like City and (to a lesser extent) NINJAGO, LEGO Friends enjoyed a reboot for 2023. This was perhaps more overt than in either of the other two evergreen themes though, as the design team introduced an entirely new cast of characters, capping off a decade of adventures for the O.G. crew. But it was the models that really shone, including one of the year’s most underrated models in 41737 Beach Amusement Park.

LEGO Ideas 2023 reviews

If there’s one thing that emerges from looking at a LEGO calendar on a macro level like this, it’s that the company is dedicated to offering variety to its fans (with the not-so-subtle ulterior motive of bringing in new fans, of course). One quick glance at the list of LEGO Ideas sets released this year is enough to confirm that, of which we’ve reviewed every single one.

LEGO NINJAGO 2023 reviews

NINJAGO’s soft reboot for 2023 applied mostly to its characters and story in the wake of last summer’s Crystalised, which meant the focus of its sets was still on mechs, temples, dragons and the like. There were a few new approaches within those tropes, though – and the debut of another new LEGO NINJAGO City set had our wallets (and shelves) weeping…

The LEGO Group didn’t let up at all on promos in 2023, with at least one gift seemingly perpetually available online and in store, and often multiple available at once. LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog 2023 reviews

What is it with LEGO Ideas sets based on video games turning into full themes? Sonic the Hedgehog follows the path originally established by Minecraft, but whether it has the same longevity as that blocky theme remains to be seen. It got off to a good start with these sets…

LEGO Speed Champions 2023 reviews

This year’s range of LEGO Speed Champions sets raced out of the garage in January with another vehicle from the Fast & Furious universe, then returned to business as usual in March. ‘Business as usual’ for Speed Champions means ‘really awesome cars’, though, so no-one’s complaining.

LEGO Star Wars 2023 reviews

‘Weird’ and ‘wild’ are words we’ve used to describe this year’s LEGO Star Wars range a few times, but they don’t get any less relevant looking at the picture in full. From the biggest prequel-era UCS set of all time to one of the strangest buildable characters of all time, 2023 had it all from a galaxy far, far away.

LEGO Super Mario 2023 reviews

We only reviewed a single LEGO Super Mario set in 2023, but it’s arguably the most interesting one: the theme’s smallest and most affordable 18+ set to date, and pseudo-addition to the Botanical Collection. If you’re really into Nintendo, anyway.

LEGO Technic 2023 reviews

LEGO Technic surprised us all in 2023 by delivering the year’s most expensive set in 42146 Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000, a towering behemoth that we genuinely struggled to photograph for our review. (It’s just so tall!) There were plenty of options for gearheads with smaller budgets too, though.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
