Celebrate Día de Muertos with LEGO Ideas as La Catrina hits 10K

The latest LEGO Ideas project to crack 10,000 votes celebrates Día de Muertos with a stunning depiction of the iconic La Catrina.

Originally created by Mexican lithographer and printmaker José Guadalupe Posada in the early 20th century, the historic image of La Catrina (or ‘the dapper skull’) was first published in a satiric newssheet in 1913. It’s since permeated Mexican culture and identity, and specifically Día de Muertos (or Day of the Dead) celebrations, and yop1172’s elaborate build commemorates generations of handcrafted Catrina sculptures using 2,894 pieces.

“Drawing inspiration from the revered clay sculptures produced by esteemed Mexican artisans, this LEGO Catrina seamlessly channels the spirit of an authentic sculpture rather than a mere costume,” the builder explains on the project page. “Mirroring the artistry of clay artisans, the model embraces the essence of minimalistic colouration, allowing the 3D texture of the bricks to shine through.

“This approach resonates with the tradition of conveying intricate details through the very medium of sculpting, embodying the spirit of Mexican craftsmanship.”

The model has taken a little under 20 months to rack up the 10,000 votes necessary to progress to the LEGO Ideas review stage. The review board will now consider whether to give it the green light and push it into production as an official LEGO set. If it makes it that far, the design team will have two versions to choose from, with both orange and pink dresses pitched by yop1172.

La Catrina also has a remarkable amount of articulation baked into the build, from its neck, head and jaw through to the shoulders, elbows, forearms and wrists. The sombrero is also removable and the skirt is adjustable. The final model stands a hair over 89cm in height, which makes it taller than both 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr and 76178 Daily Bugle.

Check out every LEGO Ideas project currently in the running in the first 2025 review in the table below. We’ll likely learn the results of this review towards the end of the year.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
